Sunscreen and Body Oil Stains on My Pool Deck

By Aaron Huisman

If you have a pool in the Phoenix area, you know the drill. Sunscreen goes on, kids jump in, and by the end of summer your pool deck is covered in pool deck stains sunscreen oil has left behind. It's one of the most common complaints I hear from homeowners in Phoenix and the surrounding Valley.

Here's why it happens and what you can actually do about it.

Why Sunscreen and Body Oil Are So Hard to Remove

Sunscreen is designed to stick to skin and resist water. That same chemistry makes it cling to concrete, pavers, and travertine. When people towel off or sit poolside, the oils transfer directly onto the deck surface. Then our brutal Phoenix sun bakes those oils right into the pores of the material.

Travertine is especially vulnerable because it's naturally porous. Concrete pool decks absorb oils fast too. Once the heat hits, the stain sets deeper with every passing day.

Add in our monsoon season and the dust storms that follow. That fine desert dust sticks to the oily residue on your deck and creates a grimy layer that gets darker over time. By September, a lot of pool decks look almost gray compared to how they started the summer.

What Doesn't Work

Hosing it down does nothing. Dish soap and a scrub brush might lift a fresh spill but won't touch anything that's been baking in 115-degree heat for a few weeks. Some people try bleach, which can actually damage travertine or strip sealant from pavers. That creates a bigger problem than the stain itself.

What Actually Works

Pressure washing with the right detergent is the most effective solution for pool deck stains sunscreen oil leaves behind. The key word is "right detergent." A degreasing agent breaks down the oil at a molecular level before the pressure rinse carries it away.

The water temperature matters too. Hot water pressure washing is significantly more effective on oil-based stains than cold water alone. It's the same reason hot water cuts grease better when you're doing dishes.

Surface type also determines the approach. Travertine needs lower pressure and a gentler touch. Concrete can handle more aggressive treatment. I always assess the surface before starting so we don't cause any etching or damage.

After cleaning, applying a fresh sealant is worth considering. A good penetrating sealer reduces how much oil the surface can absorb in the first place. It makes future cleanups much easier and protects your investment in the deck itself.

When to Call for Help

If your pool deck has visible dark spots, a greasy feel in certain areas, or a general dingy appearance that won't respond to regular cleaning, it's time for a professional wash. Many of the pool decks I clean in Scottsdale look completely transformed after a single visit. The difference between before and after is genuinely striking.

Don't wait until after monsoon season to deal with pool deck stains sunscreen oil and summer use have caused. The longer those stains sit in the heat, the harder they are to remove.
