Can I Pressure Wash My Own Driveway or Should I Hire a Pro?

By Aaron Huisman

If you've been staring at your grimy driveway and wondering whether to pressure wash your driveway yourself vs hire someone, you're not alone. I get this question all the time from homeowners across the Valley. My name is Aaron Huisman, and I run Camelback Power Wash here in Phoenix. I'm going to give you an honest answer, even if it means you decide to do it yourself.

What Makes Phoenix Driveways So Dirty

Living in the desert is rough on concrete. Between the dust storms, monsoon mud, UV breakdown, and summer heat baking everything in, Phoenix driveways take a beating that most people outside Arizona never deal with. That caliche dust gets packed into the pores of your concrete. After a monsoon, that mud dries like cement. Regular rinsing just doesn't cut it.

The Case for DIY Pressure Washing

Renting a pressure washer is doable. You can grab one from Home Depot for around $100 a day. If your driveway is small, relatively clean, and you're comfortable with the equipment, a DIY job can work fine.

A few things to know before you start:

  • Use at least 3,000 PSI for concrete. Anything less and you're mostly just wetting the surface.
  • Keep the nozzle moving. Holding it in one spot will etch your concrete permanently.
  • Work in even, overlapping passes so you don't end up with streaky lines baked in by the Phoenix sun.
  • Wear eye protection. Debris kicks back fast.

If your driveway just needs a refresh and doesn't have oil stains, deep-set algae, or years of buildup, DIY is a reasonable option.

When You Should Hire a Pro

Here's where I'll be straight with you. There are situations where hiring a professional is the smarter move.

Oil and grease stains need pre-treatment with degreasers before washing. Without that step, you're just spreading the stain around.

Heavy caliche buildup after monsoon season often requires hot water and specific detergents to fully break down.

Larger driveways take hours to do correctly. In Phoenix summers, you're working in 110-degree heat. That's not fun, and rushing leads to uneven results.

Concrete sealing is often worth pairing with a cleaning. We apply sealers after washing to protect against UV damage and make future cleanings easier. That's not something most rental setups are equipped to handle.

A professional rig runs 4,000 PSI or more with surface cleaners that leave a consistent finish. The difference in results is noticeable, especially on older driveways that have seen a few Arizona summers.

My Honest Take

If your driveway is lightly soiled and you're comfortable with equipment, give DIY a shot. If you've got stains, heavy buildup, or you just don't want to spend a Saturday in the Phoenix heat wrestling a pressure washer around, call a pro.
